Study of the High School Career and Technical Education Teacher Pathway Initiative Grant
This report summarizes the approaches that five education agencies or institutions took to increase the number of CTE teachers by recruiting and supporting new teachers in their locales. The agencies had received grants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) as part of an initiative to increase the supply of high school CTE teachers in programs that align with in-demand industry sectors or occupations in states and communities where CTE teacher shortages exist. The report includes a case study for each grantee, detailing their efforts, the challenges they encountered, and the solutions they developed while implementing their program. The grantees included two state departments of education, a regional education service center working in collaboration with universities, a community college system, and a school district. The findings indicate that establishing broader regional or statewide professional or mentoring networks through which new CTE teachers can access support from peers and more experienced CTE teachers is particularly important to help new teachers combat what many refer to as “professional isolation.”
