The False Dichotomy Between Academic Learning and Occupational Skills
Title:
The False Dichotomy Between Academic Learning and Occupational Skills
Description:
In this essay, which appeared in the September 2019 issue of Dædalus, the journal of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the authors compare vocational and academic programs at community colleges and find considerable overlap. In light of the results, the authors propose a new Gen-Tech framework, in which students focus on general education and then work-related education. This framework rejects the distinction between vocational education and academic learning. The authors consider available data and implications for both colleges and students.
