This working paper provides causal estimates of the overall employment and wage returns to the two most common types of occupational credentials: licenses and certifications. One key finding is that having a credential increased employment, primarily among women. The results from this study suggest a potential role of occupational credentials as an alternative path to marketable human capital and a signal of skills in the absence of a bachelor's degree.
