Join us for an intensive five-day Training Institute to prepare the next generation of CTE researchers.

The CTE Research Network is committed to supporting the development of the next generation of researchers who will contribute to the growing evidence base on effective career and technical education. We are now accepting applications for our summer 2022 CTE Research Training Institute.

Early-career researchers and researchers from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. The training will build the capacity of researchers to plan and conduct high-quality impact studies of CTE programs, practices, and policies. Participants will learn from experienced CTE researchers and experts in research methodology. A small class size of 16 to 18 people will allow for regular interaction with instructors and relationship building.

Training topics will include CTE research exemplars and causal research designs in the context of typical CTE programs. Instructors will facilitate data labs for participants to apply the statistical concepts presented, and guest speakers will explore topics such as seminal CTE research on Career Academies, research partnerships, and how to get your CTE project funded.

Specific topics include:

  • Introduction to CTE policies and theories
  • Overview of conducting CTE research
  • Overview of causal research design
  • Regression discontinuity designs
  • Data lab: Regression discontinuity designs
  • Comparative interrupted time series designs
  • Data lab: Comparative interrupted time series designs
  • Randomized controlled trials for CTE research

Students and instructors will meet online beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern Time for approximately two hours each morning and again in the afternoon. Between the live sessions, students will read required literature, prepare for discussions, and work with data. The training will end by 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, August 5.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the Training Institute, applicants must:

  • Have some training in quantitative research methods (e.g., linear regression)
  • Have experience using Stata and/or R for statistical analysis
  • Work in academia (faculty or graduate student) or at an organization that conducts education research (e.g., an applied research organization or state agency)
  • Have a demonstrated interest in CTE evaluation research
  • Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident

In reviewing applications, we will prioritize early career researchers who have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) or are enrolled in a doctoral program and who demonstrate potential to benefit from the training and to conduct CTE evaluation research. In addition, researchers from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. We will hold a summer Training Institute in 2023, and applicants who are not accepted this year may re-apply next year.
